How To Sleep During Pregnancy

How To Sleep During Pregnancy

Being pregnant isn’t all rainbows and butterflies. It’s a magical time in your life, but there are so many things that happen to our bodies when we are growing another human being, and a lot of it can be pretty uncomfortable.
Sleeping on your side is best while you're pregnant. In particular, sleeping on your left side may benefit your baby by improving blood flow – and therefore nutrients – to the placenta. It also helps your kidneys efficiently eliminate waste products and fluids from your body, which in turn reduces swelling in your ankles, feet, and hands.
It's a good idea to start training yourself early in pregnancy to sleep on your left side whenever you can. Of course, staying in one position all night isn't likely to be comfortable, so turning from side to side while favoring your left side is probably the best strategy.
As for sleeping on your back, avoid that position throughout pregnancy, especially in the later months. Here's why:
When you're sleeping on your back, the weight of your uterus lies on the spine, back muscles, intestines, and major blood vessels. This can lead to muscle aches and pains, hemorrhoids, and impaired circulation, which is uncomfortable for you and can reduce circulation to your baby.
Back sleeping can make blood pressure drop, causing some expectant moms to experience dizziness. On the other hand, in some moms-to-be it can make blood pressure go up.
Finally, back sleeping can cause snoring and, with increased weight, could lead to sleep apnea.
Well, you won’t be sleeping very well in the last few months. It could be the crazy raging hormones or it could be that you are just too uncomfortable to sleep (thanks to reflux, gas, constipation, back pain, Braxton Hicks…. must I go on?) Let me just preface this post with the fact that it is all totally worth it, a million times over. I would give up sleep forever to be able to make a little miracle. Thankfully there are people out there that want to make us preggo mamas as comfortable as possible.  One such company is ….Bump Nest
It's unique crook shape runs along the curve of your back supporting it's arch, up over your shoulder and under your head at the perfect height, then down along the front to support your arm and shoulder and a heavy baby belly, and between your knees all the way to your feet. It keeps your hips and spine aligned, relieves pressure on your joints, and increases blood circulation so your limbs have stopped falling asleep and causing charlie horses in the middle of the night.

Make-up Tips For Pregnancy and Beyond

Make-up Tips For Pregnancy

Pregnancy can gift you with an amazing glow, but it can also bestow a few surprising changes on your skin.

Whether your complexion's become blotchy, prone to acne, dry or oily, you don't have to grin and bear it. Take the time to dab on a bit of make-up each morning. You may feel tired, bloated or be running late for work, but just a few minutes of clever application can give you a day-long lift.

Perk up your eyes

To reduce puffiness and dark circles from lack of sleep, dab a light but nourishing eye cream under your eyes before your usual moisturiser. Then gently pat or brush on concealer or corrector. This should diminish that drowsy look and brighten your eyes.

Don't worry about concealing all of the dark under-eye area, as you can follow up with a blemish balm (BB cream) or tinted moisturiser for extra coverage.

Pregnancy glow in a tube

Now isn't the time to apply heavy foundation. Pregnancy hormones may have made your skin sensitive. Or you may have developed spots, so try to let your skin breathe.

If you're suffering from a lot of pigmentation, and have patches of darker skin on your face, a tinted moisturiser will combat this. Whatever the temporary changes to your skin, this will even out your skin tone, with no need to wear foundation on top.

BB creams and colour-correcting creams (CC creams) are multi-taskers that can give you a much-needed healthy glow, and perk up your complexion instantly. They even out flaws and won't feel cakey. Many also contain a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15.

Smooth the cream over your cleansed face and neck, paying special attention to any blemished areas. You may want to temporarily use a slightly different shade than before you were pregnant, depending on how much your skin has changed.

Healthy glow in an instant

Blusher is your friend, both now and after your little bundle arrives. No other product can lift your face, brighten your eyes and trick people into thinking you've had some sleep the way that blusher can.

Choose a cream blusher or cheek stain that can quickly double as a lip tint if you're short on time. Your face will look instantly fresher and your skin more radiant. Apply it directly, or on top of a BB cream or a tinted moisturiser.

Powders and stains tend to suit normal and combination skins, while creamier or mousse formulations tend to last longer if you have dehydrated skin.

Dab a little blusher on your finger tip, then smile and lightly pat it on to the apples of your cheeks. Blend it in until you have a level of colour you prefer. Post-pregnancy you may want a brighter shade than usual.

Bronzed and even more beautiful

Deflect attention from tired eyes with a face-brightening bronzer. A gentle sweep of highlighting bronzer can lift even the palest of complexions.

Using a big, soft brush, apply a bronzer to the tops of your cheeks, a little to your forehead and chin, and a little dab on your nose.

Gently tap any excess bronzer off the brush before applying, as you want this to enhance your make-up, not cover up all your good work.

Eye-opening tricks

However exhausted or bloated you feel, pregnancy gives your eyes a natural sparkle. You just need to enhance that with a bit of clever but quick-to-apply make-up.

A sweep of eye pencil, applied just above your top lashes, will help to define your eyes. Choose a thick pencil, so you don't have to be too precise, and try one with a hint of glitter for an extra boost.

An eyelash tint will define your eyes without the need to find time to apply mascara, though do a patch test first, as your skin may be more sensitive than usual in pregnancy. Or try using eyelash curlers to open tired eyes and give instant lift to your face.

Choose a black, lash-coating mascara to give you long, fluttery lashes and more defined eyes. Wiggle the mascara wand from side to side while applying to separate and coat each lash.

Lip uplifters

There's nothing more uplifting than a new, bright lipstick. A long-lasting formula will last most of the day without the need for touch-ups.

The right colour lipstick can lift your face instantly. Choose the shade that flatters your features and enhances your natural skintone. It's usually one or two shades darker than your natural lip colour, but don't be afraid of trying red for a bit of daytime glamour.

If you prefer a more natural look, a lightly tinted lip gloss will perk you up and is easy to apply without a mirror.

Quick facial pick-me-up

For an instant skin refresher, try an unscented facial mist. This will help to reduce puffiness, calm sensitive skin and refresh your make-up.

Close your eyes and spritz a few pumps about 25cm (10in) from your face.

Carry a small bottle in your bag so you can refresh whenever you feel the need to perk up your sleep-deprived face. Or pop it in the fridge to soothe you in the summer (or holiday) heat.

Six Perfect Pregnancy Snack

Six Perfect Pregnancy Snack

During pregnancy, hunger can strike at any moment (with or without warning).
In fact, we’re guessing that by now, you’re familiar with this scenario: One minute you’re fine; the next minute, you’re sitting at your desk starting at an empty candy wrapper wondering how that got there.
The solution to combating sneaky wrappers is this: always be prepared. Stash healthy options in your purse, at your desk and in the car. To get you started, we put together a list of our favorite snacks for pregnancy. These options are packed with nutrition, so you don’t pack on extra pounds.
  • LARABAR Cherry Pie – With only 3 ingredients — unsweetened cherries, dates and almonds — this tasty little bar packs in 4 grams of fiber, 5 grams of protein and ¼ cup of fruit!  Did we mention it’s yummy, tart, and all-around deliciousness in a wrapper – with a cherry on top?!
  • Trail Mix – Grab a Ziploc, throw in sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, walnuts, dried cranberries, dark chocolate and viola!  High in Omega 3s, Vitamin E, Magnesium and Copper, this snack is the perfect combination to satisfy your sweet (and salty) tooth.
  • Baby Carrots + Hummus – Crisp, high fiber carrots combined with protein-and-iron-packed hummus is a simple yet satisfying snack.
  • Plain, Fat Free Greek Yogurt + Fresh Berries – Add your own berries (strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, raspberries) to avoid the added sugars of yogurts that contain fruit already. This take-anywhere snack is high in protein (18 grams) and filled with fiber and Vitamin C.
  • Low-fat String Cheese + Almonds – Full of calcium, protein and healthy fats, this snack is always a crowd pleaser…in fact, you may want to pack extra.
  • Popcorn – When prepared with just the right ingredients, popcorn is low in calories, heart-smart, and surprisingly chock-full of healthy nutrients. And, since it’s 100% whole grain, popcorn is also a great source of fiber -- you get 5 grams in a 4-cup portion. That's pretty darn impressive for a snack food.

13 Things All Men Should Know About Pregnant Women

By: Aaron Gouveia

When it comes to dealing with pregnant women, I'm no expert. Hell, I still don't even know how to figure out women in general. In fact, I'm the antithesis of an expert. Luckily for you, I've made just about every single stupid mistake and placed my foot so far in my mouth during my wife's pregnancies that I'm overqualified to speak to you about things you need to know to avoid getting knocked out by the knocked up.
Things All Men Should Know About Pregnant Women
Here are the 13 most important things to remember.
1. Feed her constantly.
Everyone knows food is important to pregnant women. But what the uninitiated might not realize is that time is of the essence. The bottom line is, when she says she's hungry, she means it. Feed that woman immediately or she will eat your f*cking face. Know that "I'm hungry" doesn't mean she's looking forward to the dinner plans you have in an hour. It means give her a snack before you leave for the restaurant. And then again when you get in the car. Failure to promptly produce snacks will result in extreme b*tchiness at best, and bodily injury at worst. Just turn yourself into a walking, talking vending machine for nine months and you'll be fine.
2. Food: What's yours is hers, what's hers is off-limits.
There's a good chance you've been married or together a few years now, so it's perfectly understandable that you bought into all that stuff about togetherness and sharing a life, etc. And while some of that still applies, all bets are off when it comes to food. If you eat food that's hers (or food you bought for yourself but she somehow claimed as hers), she will cut you. Not physically, perhaps, but by the time she's finished excoriating you you'll wish it was just a knife wound you suffered. I ate some of MJ's chocolate once, and when she went to find it during a craving and saw that it was gone, she flew into a rage that was one of the scariest things I've ever seen. Just don't do it.
3. Get ready to gain weight.
Notice how all the topics so far have involved food? That's no mistake. Ultimately, at some point, she'll have cravings. When MJ was pregnant with Will, she wanted pizza, Kit Kats and grapefruit. The second time around, it was nothing but fruit salad. But whatever the craving, one of the unmentioned side effects of pregnancy is YOUR weight gain. Yes, the guys gain weight, too. Mainly because we inevitably partake in our partners' cravings and all the extra junk food results in a spare tire. I gained 25 pounds during MJ's pregnancy five years ago, just a shade under the total amount she gained -- WITH THE BABY! So watch your step.
4. Don't point out how big she's getting.
My Boston sports habit notwithstanding, I'm a fairly logical person. I knew MJ was pregnant and pregnant women gain weight. That's why I thought absolutely nothing of pointing out my wife's really cute swollen belly. In my mind, it was just nature progressing and running its course, and there was nothing more beautiful. But after the first two or three times I said it, she snapped on me. "STOP TELLING ME I'M FAT! I KNOW I'M FAT! I DON'T NEED YOU POINTING IT OUT!!" It didn't matter that in my eyes she had never looked more beautiful, or that she was SUPPOSED to be gaining weight. Which leads me to my next point...
5. "Pregnancy Brain" is very real.
I know it sounds like some sort of cutesy, media-created term. But it's not. Pregnancy Brain is legit. It starts with everyday occurrences like looking for her glasses while they're on her head, which is kind of adorable. But it soon progresses to things like leaving the basement door open in 5-degree weather and freezing the entire bottom floor of the house while simultaneously leaving us susceptible to a home invasion. And in a fit of irony, I just asked MJ to give me more examples of Pregnancy Brain, but she couldn't -- because she can't remember.
6. Goodbye, sense of humor.
The good news is: she's gained a baby. The bad news? There wasn't enough room for the baby AND her sense of humor. If you're a smart-a** like I am, this is especially troubling, since I show affection by giving people good-natured sh*t. Unfortunately, my pregnant wife does not appreciate my unique brand of humor while carrying our little parasite around in her stomach. The results are often me firing off (what I consider to be) beautiful comedic quips and zingers, which don't just fall on deaf ears -- they fall on potentially homicidal ears. You've been warned.
7. Say goodbye to sex, too.
Listen to me carefully -- you're about to be sexually frustrated. The first trimester is by far the worst. It's when she'll be going through the most changes and feeling the sh*ttiest. It's everything she can do to avoid throwing up every morning (and sometimes at night), so your feeling unloved and "backed up" doesn't really register. So fire up the porn and give yourself a hand, because you're now a sex camel, my friend. The only silver lining is you'll have sex two times during the pregnancy. You have a one- to two-week window when her sex drive returns early in the second trimester. Enjoy that, because it's not happening again until very late in the pregnancy. Right at the end she'll be so desperate to get the baby out of her that she'll use you in the hopes that sex will send her into labor. It's slightly awkward, but after the drought it's a welcome relief -- as long as her water doesn't break right then and there.
8. Yes, her boobs are bigger; no, you can't touch them.
While we're on the topic of sex, let me tell you about one of nature's cruelest tricks. When a woman is carrying a child, it's a beautiful thing. That "pregnant glow" you always hear about is real, and it does wonders for her hair, her fingernails and -- her rack. A becomes C, B becomes D and C becomes Hallelujah Thank You Jesus! They swell up to gargantuan sizes, literally breaking bras at the seams and popping off her chest in a fit of Playboy glory. The only problem is, you're not allowed to touch them. It's like going to the pet store and seeing the cute puppies behind the glass but not being able to pet them. They're adorable and you want to take them home and keep them forever, but if you try to motorboat her puppies she will slap the sh*t out of you. Trust me.
9. Your dick can't hurt the baby.
Let's get this one out of the way right now -- your penis will have no effect on the baby in your wife's womb. Got that? I don't care if you're on par with Ron Jeremy, your dick is not going to scare the kid and it's certainly not going to poke him in the forehead. Not only that, but any suggestion to the contrary will send your pregnant wife into hysterics. And there's nothing more demoralizing than a conversation that involves your penis and hysterical laughter. So I'm told...
10. You will be replaced by pillows.
Did you spend a crap ton of money on a mattress? Some sort of memory foam or pillowtop deal that makes you feel like 1,000 little angels are massaging you as you fall asleep every night? Well, I hope you also spent money on a comfortable couch, because that's likely where you'll be sleeping for a decent part of the pregnancy. And it's not so much because of the increased space your pregnant wife takes up, either. It's the pillows. Yup, that's right. You become increasingly irrelevant as the pregnancy wears on, but the 37 pillows -- including that godforsaken full-body pillow -- become absolutely vital nighttime companions. And when push comes to shove, you're getting the shove to the sofa.
11. Don't treat her like glass.
Many men -- myself included -- feel very protective of their wives in general. But when it's our baby growing inside of her, that protective instinct suddenly ratchets up several notches. I try not to let MJ open doors, carry groceries, pick up heavy objects, etc. And for whatever reason, that sticks in her craw something fierce. It's not that I don't think she can fend for herself; I just feel it's more important than ever to keep her safe, and to make sure the heavy lifting is kept to a minimum. And that's when I get the "I'M NOT MADE OF GLASS, STOP TREATING ME LIKE A PRINCESS!" retort. Oh well, husbands/boyfriends of pregnant women are damned if we do and damned if we don't.
12. Pregnant women are lazy.
This one is VERY touchy. After all, they're carrying new life around inside of them. Their bodies are growing, stretching and changing to accommodate said life. But the fact remains, pregnant women are L-A-Z-Y. Case in point, a disturbing trend has emerged in the Daddy Files household during my wife's second pregnancy. MJ has not only stopped doing dishes, she's no longer even attempting to put the dirty dishes in the sink. Instead, she brings them into the kitchen and puts them a foot away from the sink. Moreover, all of the coffee cups are half-full and every bowl has a ton of soggy cereal remaining in it. I don't mind doing the dishes, but I do mind a counter full of crap. How hard is it to empty the dishes and move them ONE MORE FOOT into the sink?? But you can't gripe about this because...
13. You can't complain.
All these things I've listed? You can't mention any of them to your pregnant wife. Because even if she's lazy, not giving you any, won't let you touch her boobs, can't remember a thing, sleeping with the Pillow People, making you crash on the couch, putting on massive amounts of weight, and eating you out of house and home, it doesn't matter. She's pregnant. She's carrying your child. Which means she's got the trump card and all your complaints are hereby dismissed. Seriously, just think about you complaining and what her response will be. Something like "Dishes? You're complaining about dishes?? I'm growing a human being in my stomach the size of a watermelon that I'll eventually have to push out an opening the size of a lemon. NOW WHAT WERE YOU COMPLAINING ABOUT AGAIN?!?"

4 Tips on Telling the Boss You're Pregnant

How to tell the Boss You're Pregnant

It won't be long before that belly of yours starts to pop, and before it does (or before she gets wise to your stretched-to-the-limit waistbands) you should belly up to your boss's desk to break that news. But don't do it without a plan in hand. Here are some tips to make sure your announcement is well received:

Do your homework. Find out what kind of policies your company may have regarding pregnancy rights and maternity leave. Review your employee handbook (if there is one) or ask someone at human resources. Try to do it confidentially, if possible. You don't want the news leaking to your boss before you're ready to make the break.

Ask around. If you know of any good (read: trustworthy) colleagues who have walked in your soon-to-be-swollen footsteps, consider asking them what their experience was like and whether the response to their pregnancy was positive or not. Again, any confiding you do with close colleagues should be done discretely, otherwise, your boss may find out about your pregnancy through the grapevine (or at the water cooler) instead of through you.

Come up with a plan. Decide how much time you'd like to take off, when you'd like to start your leave (do you want to take off a couple of weeks before you're due or wait until that first contraction hits before you pack up your desk?), and what kind of back-to-work arrangements you'd like to make (part-time, full-time, telecommuting, and so on). You might also want to come up with solutions as to how you'll finish up projects before your leave, or how your work can be handled while you're away. You boss will probably appreciate any efforts you make to ensure all transitions are taken care of.

Make it official.  Schedule an appointment to make the announcement, making sure you'll have enough time to discuss everything you want to cover (in other words, not in the elevator at the end of the day or two minutes before a conference call). Make sure whatever you've agreed on is in writing so there won't be any misunderstandings later.

If your boss is less than enthusiastic about your pregnancy, take it in stride. But also know your rights. There are laws that protect pregnant workers against discrimination.

Good luck with your announcement!

10 Pregnant Characters For Hallowen Costumes

No need to work around your bump come October 31st — thanks to that growing belly and these ideas, your costume is taken care of! Just choose a pregnant character from pop culture (Kim Kardashian, anyone?) and start celebrating for two.

Beyoncé

10 Pregnant Characters Perfect for Maternity Halloween Costumes

Blue Ivy has long since taken her first steps (she's probably even mastered the "Single Ladies" dance by now), but her mom's 2011 pregnancy couldn't have been more memorable. Mimic her jaw-dropping VMA announcement in black pants, a white button down, and a sequin purple blazer that you can pop open when people implore about your costume. Don't have one lying around? Check EBay or get extra crafty with an old jacket and a glue gun. If you're feeling especially gutsy, you can don a long-sleeved leotard and a massive costume ring to imitate Beyoncé's most instantly recognizable look from the aforementioned "Single Ladies" video.

Demi Moore

10 Pregnant Characters Perfect for Maternity Halloween Costumes

Before posing nude on a magazine cover was practically a celebrity pregnancy prerequisite, Demi Moore was famously the first to bare all for Vanity Fair. But don't worry, you don't have to go nude for this costume — just find a tight flesh-colored ensemble (American Apparel's leotards do come in extra large!) and create a Vanity Fair sign to wear with your costume. Bonus points if you rock a short Demi wig or create faux-arms, scarecrow style, to wrap over your chest and under your belly.

Hester Prynne

10 Pregnant Characters Perfect for Maternity Halloween Costumes

The Scarlet Letter makes frequent appearances on high school reading lists, but not quite as many on Halloween — so why don't you and your bump change that? Dress in your finest Puritan garb (it could be as simple as a long dress and the right hat) and slap a bright red A on your chest. Your partner can dress as the Minister Dimmesdale, so long as your friends who haven't read the book (or the Spark Notes) won't be upset by the spoiler.

Jackie Kennedy

10 Pregnant Characters Perfect for Maternity Halloween Costumes

If you're in the mood for a more modest costume, Jackie O is definitely your girl. She was pregnant with John-John during JFK's 1960 election, but it was hard to tell thanks to her wardrobe of well-tailored coats and sensible kitten heels. Hit up a consignment store for a flattering, conservative coat dress, then pair with gloves, pearls, and Jackie's signature oversized shades. Hello, Jackie O!

         Arnold Schwarzenegger in "Junior"

10 Pregnant Characters Perfect for Maternity Halloween Costumes

Before the world's first pregnant man, the Terminator turned Governator gave us Junior, a 90s flick about a male scientist who agrees to carry a pregnancy for a fertility project. People might get it if you put on a suit, but why not add a faux muscle shirt (you are Ah-nold, after all) and some glasses? Maybe you can even convince your partner to play your sidekick, Danny DeVito.

Juno

10 Pregnant Characters Perfect for Maternity Halloween Costumes

Does it get more iconic than a pregnant Ellen Page in oversized clothes with a gallon of Tang? For this costume, you're all set if you wear your baggiest maternity jeans (bonus points if you wear a skirt over them!), a hooded zip-up sweatshirt and striped shirt, and pull your hair up in a ponytail. (Kudos if you can get your hands on a hamburger phone!) If your partner is willing to don a Michael Cera–inspired track ensemble with too-short shorts, more power to him.

Kate Middleton

10 Pregnant Characters Perfect for Maternity Halloween Costumes

Oh, if only we could all look like the Duchess every moment of pregnancy! Be royal for at least one day in your most stylish pregnancy dress, heels (if you dare), and — this is crucial — a fascinator hat to exemplify your British style. You can try talking your hubby into getting you a massive sapphire ring for the occasion, but if he isn't budging you can probably find a fake one online.

Kim Kardashian

10 Pregnant Characters Perfect for Maternity Halloween Costumes

You could probably get away with wearing a tight dress and calling yourself Kim K during pregnancy, but why not have a little more fun with it? If you're crafty, you can probably mimic her floor-length floral gown with something from the fabric store (dare we say look in the upholstery section?). And maybe consider amping up your, ahem, assets for the night — you can get Kim's enviable bottom and boobs with something as simple as a few pillows and a stuffed bra.

"Knocked Up" Couple

10 Pregnant Characters Perfect for Maternity Halloween Costumes

Sure, there was nothing too recognizable about Katherine Heigl's Knocked Up character, but this costume's perfect if you're not in the mood to dress up but your partner is gung-ho. Simply wear something pretty and carry an E! microphone (remember how her character was an on-air host?), or go ahead and get in that hospital gown now. Your partner can go all out in full Seth Rogan stoner attire with a curly-haired wig, a dirty tee and pajama bottoms, and whatever, er, paraphernalia he thinks will sell the part.

Michelle Duggar

10 Pregnant Characters Perfect for Maternity Halloween Costumes

Considering this TLC star was pregnant over 19 times, there are few other people as commonly associated with a baby bump. Simply style your hair into her iconic perm, slip on a floor-grazing prairie dress or a similarly modest ensemble, and surround yourself with kiddos — we suggest pinning baby dolls to your outfit to get the point across.
