Dragon Theme Nursery

We’ve followed “The Guncles” Bill Horn and Scout Masterson’s growing family for their daughter’s sweet birthday parties and big girl room makeover. We are so pleased to be showing off their latest adventure—baby Bosley, or Boz for short. When we congratulated them on the news of their baby boy, we couldn’t wait to get a peek at the nursery, and it did not disappoint. So please join us as we take a tour around the space and hear about a few of the details from the happy dads themselves.

We discussed many, many themes, but we didn’t want to duplicate someone else’s look, and we didn’t want to pick a current trend. We were searching cool wallpapers online and came across this amazing medieval castle and dragons design from Paper Boy London. We had the wallpaper and some of the matching fabric shipped stateside, and the whole look of the room came together from there. Boz loves to stare at the wallpaper.

We painted the book wall the same dark blue color of the castles and dragons in the wallpaper. We had the other two walls painted a very, very pale blue to match the background of the paper and serve as a slight contrast to room’s moldings, shutters and stark white ceiling.

We are obsessed with this custom made duc duc Regency 4 drawer dresser and changer. We really wanted a piece in blue to tie in the wallpaper, and the dresser is so well made, we know we’ll have it forever.

We love the Sleepi Crib (currently in its bassinet form). It’s on wheels, so it can easily be wheeled anywhere in the room or in the house. As the Mini bassinet, it fits nicely next to our bed.

The daybed was the first piece of furniture for the room. With Boz moving into our only guest room, we needed an extra place for guests to stay, and it’s great for late night feedings.

On the one dark blue wall, we hung eight of the Straight and Narrow Bookledges from The Land of Nod in white so we could display tons of Boz’s new and antique books—lots about dragons.

2015 Nursery Color Trend

It’s no secret that I LOVE color, especially in the nursery, and I always enjoy watching color trends unfold and expand outside the nursery too! I give full credit to nursery design for starting the coral painted furniture trend that seems to be everywhere nowadays.

When I started Caden Lane in 2005, pink or blue paired with brown was a huge color combination for the baby’s room. Brown had never been incorporated into the nursery before (everything was pastel), and I love how we’ve incorporated new colors into the nursery design spectrum every year since then!

I have a gut feeling that this year is going to be filled with color! We can say goodbye to the monochromatic all-white and all-gray nurseries and expect rooms with colorful accents, and I think we’re going to see hues that have always been around but never really trended before. Here are my top five picks for 2015 nursery color trends.

Bright pastels. Think sweet, soft pastels, and turn them up a notch! Don’t be intimidated by this mix because there’s no limit when you’re combining colors! Pinks, corals, aquas, mints and golds all have a feminine feel and can work for so many different design styles. I love the bright, whimsical feel of these colors—they’re making me wish for warmer weather and the sweet smell of flowers!

Shades of purple. Pantone recently announced that the 2015 color of the year is Marsala, a rich burgundy hue resembling my favorite beverage of choice (wine). The folks at Pantone probably don’t have baby on the mind when they are picking their featured shade, but this gorgeous, rich hue belongs to the purple color family, and that is one of my top picks for 2015! Purple has always been the “other choice” for girls’ nursery designs, but for someone who doesn’t want too much pink or is looking for a sweet accent color, purple is the perfect complement for a variety of other colors and styles!

I love this purple and gray nursery from our gallery—the entire feel of the nursery is calm and refreshing, and the different shades of lilac, lavender and dark purple all work so wonderfully together.

Coral and gold. Coral made its debut in 2014, but I predict it to hold strong through all of 2015! This is one of my favorite recent coral and gold nursery designs in the gallery—it’s like these colors were destined to be together. *sigh*

Mint is the new neutral. Designing a gender-neutral nursery? Well, you’re in luck! This gender-neutral friendly shade of green looks gorgeous with navy or pink, and it goes gorgeously with my favorite metallic color trend—GOLD! I love how this beautiful mint nursery is paired with dark brown furniture, a color and style that I also think will start to make a comeback in the next calendar year!

Move over silver, GOLD is here to stay! Gray nurseries have been all over the gallery for years, and then there was this PERFECT gold nursery. And my heart stopped. It’s the new neutral, and gold goes with EVERYTHING.

Darling 3-Month-Old and His Safari Themed Nursery

Brooke Whitney Photography captured this darling little guy at three months old, bright eyed and full of smiles, in a beautiful at-home session with his parents. This trio could not be cuter, and we love his nursery too! It's so light and sophisticated, but fun, too, with a classic safari theme.

Coral and Teal Nursery

A Project For: Sloane

Age: 1 month

Location: Southern California

Description: This coral and teal nursery was a labor of love that I designed for my sister who was due with her first child in March.  I couldn't wait for my niece to arrive.

Design Inspiration: We wanted a light and bright color scheme consisting of shades of coral and peach, with touches of gold and teal.  The inspiration piece really became the "Love is Spoken Here" print from The Painted Arrow.

Decorating Style: When I style a room I always try to make sure the pieces I chose will transition from the baby stage, beyond.  I like to keep a balance between patterns used as to make sure each one is special and not overpowering.

Favorite Items: My favorite item surprisingly is the way the framed ombre print makes such an impact on the space.  Close behind is the transformation that the dresser went through and how special the knobs are.  There are so many personal touches through out this space, I could go on and on.

Advice: To recreate this space it is just about keeping your furniture pieces in a cohesive color and allowing the main color to be spread throughout the space in all different shades i.e. what we did with the coral.  Then allow a few pops of another color, teal, to add some depth to the room.
